Cerro Aconcagua, at 22,830ft (6959 meters), is the tallest mountain in the western and southern hemispheres. Clmibing it is no small challenge. I’ve climbed mountains over 14,000ft, less than 2/3rds of the total height of Aconcagua. The atmosphere holds 60% less oxygen at the summit of this great mountain, making high elevation the greatest challenge that will meet me in Argentina, South America.
Aconcagua Facts
- Summit: 22830 feet (6959 meters)
- Highest point in the Western and Southern hemisphere
- One of the much sought after “Seven Summits” of the world
- First summit: Swiss Climber Mathias Zurbriggen
But, a guy doesn’t just wake up and climb a mountain this large. So to prepare, I’m on a mountaineering schedule to prepare for the expedition.
When will you do it?
Currently it looks like the expedition will happen late in the year in 2012 or 2013. Reasons for the date being pushed out so far include:
- Required acclimatizing climbs on smaller mountains
- Time for me to learn how to climb proficiently on unstable rock and ice
- Time for my career to progress so I can take a full month off of work required to climb a mountain this high
- $$$
Most climbing accidents occur when climbers are inexperienced, not properly equipped, or rushed. I intend to take my time and insure I have the best possibe chance at reaching the summit.
Here is my full climbing schedule.
